Board games have been played throughout the history of many cultures and countries. The first board game can be dated back to 3500 B.C. when Egyptians would play a game known today as Senet. Over the years the popularity of board games grew as cultures throughout Europe adopted various board games for past time entertainment. Now days a large variety of board games exist that are used for many different events and occasions.

With modern technology games are now often played on computers. Instead of waiting for someone to play with, people can now compete against the computer in many different virtualized versions of classic board games. Or, through use of the internet, people are now able to connect and compete with someone on the other side of the world or on the other side of the neighborhood.

Board games can be played in large groups at parties, with a small family for some family bonding time, with two people or even with just one person. Different board games can be categorized into various categories, such as: classic, puzzle or strategy.

Strategy board games are games that involve a significant amount of strategy, not just luck, to win. Games such as Chess and Checkers rely entirely upon evolving a winning strategy and have very little to do with luck. Other games, such as Yahtzee, Sorry, or Snakes and Ladders have virtually no involvement of strategy and rely purely on the luck of the dice or of the cards. Most games, however, rely on a little bit of both. Games such as Risk and Monopoly are examples of these. It is important to have a strategy to win, however a few good or bad rolls of the dice can make a good or bad strategy useless.

Puzzle board games are the most common type of board game played alone. There are countless numbers of different board games available on the Web, making them perfect for killing time on breaks or just when board. Other puzzle board games are made for two or more people to compete against each other. Games such as Mastermind require problem solving skills, while racing against your opponent to see who can figure out the puzzle the fastest.

Classic board games are those games that our grandparent’s parents played when they where children and yet we still enjoy them today. Games such as Battleship, which has been modernized, or Risk, which has many different versions with different movie themes, but still has the same playing rules and instructions are great examples of classic board games. Other classics include Monopoly, Life, Clue, Stratego, Connect Four, Checkers, and Sorry.

Other categories of board games include: Race games, roll-and-move games, word games, trivia games, chess sets, drinking games, kids games, and party games. The different pages of this site explain in depth the various types of board games.
